Lawrence Copeland, the immigrant ancestor,was born in Scotland in 1599. The Scotch family of Copeland has been located in has been located in Dumfrieshire since the year 1400. He came to this country about the time that Cromwell sent over his Scotchtish prisoners of war, many who became prosperous citizens in a few years. He settle in Braintree, Ma. Where he married soon afterward, Lydia Townsend, Dec 12. 1651. She died Jan. 8,1688. He died December 30 1699, aged 100 years, Children Thomas born Dec, 3 ,1652 died young. William Copeland, son of ?Lawrance Copeland was born in Braintree Mass, Nov. 15, 1656
and died there in 1716. He married April 13, 1694 to Mary Bass Webb widow of Christopher Webb Jr. and{daughter of John and Ruth Alden Bass.} Ruth Alden was Daughter of Hon. John and Priscilla Mullins. Alden, the Mayflower Immigrants made celebrated by Longfellows poams.

Mary Bass was also descended from Samuel Bass of Boston and Braintree, Deacon freeman May 10, 1634 deputy to the genral court in 1634. Woodbury's Company, Colonel Jon Cusing's regiment, July 28 to Aug. 29 1777, reinforcing the northern army under Genral Stark: Also in 1780 in Captain Lords Company, Colonel Grouts Regiment. He was also in the Continental army, Colonel Sparhawks Regiment Feb 16,1778
Afterwards in Captain Wheelers Company, Col Nixons 's Regiment. he was also in Captain Ephriam Sterns Company, Colonel John Rands Regiment July 9-Oct.1780. See MASS. Soldiers and Sailors in the evolution Vol,111 page 986-8. part of his s3ervice was credited to Athol part to Royalston.
